Wilms' tumor is a solid tumor that originates in the kidney. It usually occurs in children under 5 years of age, although it appears occasionally in older children and rarely in adults. The cause of Wilms’ tumor isn’t known.

Patients with localized tumors have a 90% cure rate when treated with surgery and chemotherapy or surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy combined. The most dangerous complication is the spreading of Wilms Tumor to the lungs, liver, bone, brain, or other kidney.

Unfortunately, there is not a great deal of information about recurrent Wilms like Lauren has.  If you would like to learn more about Wilms Tumor, please visit these links:

The Lincoln Candlelighters have been a great support organization as Lauren has struggled with both episodes of her treatments.  Here is some additional information from this great group:

The Lincoln Candlelighters is a support group for families of children with cancer or any serious illness. Our parent support group and youth group meet the first Tuesday of every month between 6:30 and 8:30 pm at Tabitha Health Care, 4720 Randolph St., Lincoln, Nebraska. (Come in the J Street entrance, and go to the meeting rooms in the basement.)

What do we do at Candlelighters?
The parents have the opportunity to talk and ask questions of others who have had experience with seriously ill children and frequent hospitalizations. The kids play games and do craft activities with supervision. Dinner is provided free of charge, for everyone who attends.

The Lincoln Candlelighters also has at least two events throughout the year for families to get together and just have fun. Past events include picnics, bowling, ice skating, the Lincoln Children¹s Museum, pumpkin patch visits and cookouts. The whole family, including siblings and grandparents are invited to all the meetings and events. Events and outings are always free.

Our Mission
The Lincoln Candlelighters is a group organized for the purpose of understanding the unique challenges faced by individuals and families of those having cancer or other serious childhood illnesses. It is our goal to provide support, encouragement and hope to these individuals and their families by providing an opportunity to share information, resources and experiences.

If you would like to find out more about the Lincoln Candlelighters, please call Dale Minter at 489-1119 or email.
